Love International 2019

Love International 2019 – First artists revealed

Hot on the heels of another glorious outing on the Croatian coast, Love International 2019 has already revealed the first wave of acts that will be appearing during their magical week next year – 3rd to 10th July 2019 in Tisno.

Now in its 4th season, Love International 2019 will continue to embrace a peerless array of sounds and styles across a scintillating spectrum, from disco, house and techno, through to dub, reggae, funk and Balearic. All the most brilliant parts of the festival will be present – from the pulsating boat parties to intimate beach-side dancing, the main Garden Stage to the the mesmeric Olive Grove and definitely not forgetting the iconic open-air club, Barbarella’s.

Love International 2019

Love International is a holiday and a festival merged into one – set in a gorgeous location on the Adriatic coast in the picturesque little town of Tisno. It is no wonder that music lovers and adventure seekers from all over Europe and even further beyond descend for a truly magical week under the sun and stars, weaving together a genuine sense of community, kinship and connection into all who attend.

Love International 2019 – First artists revealed

Outright electronic music pioneer Ben UFO is one third of Hessle Audio and an annual Love International fixture, with intimate knowledge of the festival. A legend in every sense, Andrew Weatherall, will be playing for the first time at the festival. From Boys’ Own to Shoom filtered through Two Lone Swordsmen, he has worked with everyone from New Order to Primal Scream to Villalobos. His extended sets capture a deeper and more spiritual experience. Next up, Harry – aka Midland – is a Love Int icon, with his genre-weaving and joyous back to back sets bring a raw sense of abandon each time, whilst Shanti Celeste is a veteran in four to the floor dance music, cultivating house, techno, garage and electro classics. Beautiful Swimmers’ cult following savours their richly textured odysseys, through to Love Int faves Horse Meat Disco bringing buckets of dazzling disco and amped-up house, to a techno innovator of sublime electronic beauty, Call Super. There’s a debut from Nicolas Lutz, whose sets deep with rich detail, and Ivan Smagghe is a DJ’s DJ pure and simple, making a very rare Croatian appearance.

DMX Krew has over twenty-five years of electronic music innovation, a prominent artist on Aphex Twin’s legendary ‘Rephlex’ imprint and also the founder of both Breakin’ Records and Fresh UP. NTS’s Moxie is champion of independent dance music, and Ruf Dug brings the leftfield – expect dusty analogue disco dreamers and poolside Balearic belters. Saoirse is one of the most revered spinners around, whist co-founder of Red Light Radio, Orpheu The Wizard, is a key figure in Amsterdam’s underground music and makes his debut.

Rinse FM’s Josey Rebelle is a Sunday morning purveyor of quality electronic music and hangover; she joins the dots between house, techno, disco and more. Powder is a Love Int legend in the making after her boat party performance. Then four further debutants line up: Lithuanian native Manfredas is behind the seminal Smala party at Opium Club; CC:Disco is a Melbourne native channelling modern soul, house and boogie; Ciel is a DJ, producer, radio host, creator of Toronto’s Work in Progress party series, and co-founder of collective It’s Not U It’s Me; Justin Cudmore is a stalwart of the Wrecked, Queen!, Horse Meat Disco, Hot Mass and Club Toilet parties, and a member of the NYC Bunker Crew; and Willow is one of the most compelling producers to arrive in the last few years. Finally Gatto Fritto is back, the esteemed curator of the first Sound Of Love International compilation released earlier in the year.

Tom Paine, one of the festival’s co-founders, explains:

“We are all immensely proud of our first names for summer 2019 in Tisno. It’s a really great mix of debutants, old faces and new friends coming to join us for our 4th year. We also are fully committed to developing the sense of community which really bloomed this summer, we want everyone who comes to feel unity and to feel free. It’s really important for us to keep exploring new sounds at the festival – for example the dub, reggae and Sunrise Sessions will be enhanced again for 2019. This year we invested more in the production too, especially at the Beach Stage where we moved the booth down to the water level, making it much more intimate. We also enhanced the Garden Stage and added extra detail across the whole site. We will be enhancing this even further next year.”

England and Croatia - Cup of Tea

England and Croatia – A highly scientific and detailed comparison

England and Croatia may play it out on a football field in Moscow tonight, but who wins if we compare the two countries based on other criteria? Check out our highly scientific comparison below, which we spent ages (definitely more than 5 minutes) putting together.

Beauty of the Country

England – green and pleasant land.

Croatia – millions and millions (actually, 1,246) of islands, eight national parks, Istria, Zadar, Split, Dubrovnik… I’m sorry, but just look at this:

England and Croatia
View over Hvar Town

Croatia win

National drinks

England and Croatia - Cup of Tea
A nice combination of England and Croatia in one photo…

England – tea

Croatia – sljivovica

Both very useful for calming nerves. Doling out sljivovica less damaging to the country’s national grid at critical times. But hmmmm, tea.

England win. Hands down.

Not being born yet

England and Croatia - Happy Birthday Croatia

England – Sixteen of the England squad weren’t even born yet when England last played in a semi final at the World Cup.

Croatia – Croatia not even born yet when England last played a semi final.

Croatia win

Despair and triumph at Wimbledon

Tough one, this. To lose three times in a Wimbledon final – twice narrowly – must be heartbreaking. To then win it as a wild card, ranked 120-something in the world, is the stuff of dreams. (And should have been made into a movie, by now.) Step forward Goran Ivanisevic. (Obviously played by Goran Visnjic when the movie comes out.)

But to be the first Brit since 1398 (or thereabouts) to win the glorious title, bettering even Tim Herman’s epic FOUR semi final appearances is absolutely magic. Bravo, Andy Murray!

Draw (And something epic like 4-4)

Football kit

England – white shirt, dark blue shorts, classic. Can’t go wrong. Could wear it to a club, on a date, to work. Whatever, man.

Croatia – red and white checks, nothing else like it. Pros – you can see a Croatian football fan from two miles away; cons – on closer inspection, it sometimes turns out to be a table.

England win

Football Crest

Three Lions on a shirt. No one sings about H N S on a shirt, do they?

🦁🦁🦁

England win

Football songs

No contest. You can’t move in England for hearing Three Lions every two minutes; if it’s not blaring out of someone’s car it’s the tenth version of the meme you’ve seen today. And to have World in Motion as backup (which has surprisingly been under played this time round) surpasses everything else.

England win (Croatia haven’t even entered the stadium)

Passports

England and Croatia - Croatian passport

England – Reverting back to beautiful blue!

Croatia – always have been blue, despite being in the EU. (UK – “Wot??”)

Croatia win

The EU

England – leaving

Croatia – joining (well, in 2013)

Croatia win
(Sorry Brexiters. But you’re probably not reading this anyway.)

Captain Fantastics

England – Harry Kane. Scores without even being involved in a goal. (See his third goal against Panama.)

Croatia – Luka Modric. Ridiculously talented, despite being no taller than Ant or Dec. (Which is weird, considering Croats are officially amongst the tallest people in the world. If they hadn’t counted Modric, Croatia would actually be in first place.)

England win – with a goal scored off Harry Kane’s nose

Best male pundit on UK TV

England – erm…

Croatia – Slaven Bilic. Hands down.

Croatia win

Best World Cup 2018 performance

England – six past (ahem) Panama! Get in!

Croatia – 3-0 against Messi and Argentina. Ajmo!

Croatia win

Winning a World Cup match on penalties for the first time ever

England – ✔️

Croatia – ✔️ (and then ✔️again)

Draw

Fan parks shown on TV

Croatia – thousands and thousands of people in the main squares of Croatia; letting of flares in Trg ban Jelacic in Zagreb; singing at the top of their lungs by the Riva in Split beside the beautiful Adriatic sea; packing out the gleaming Stradun in Dubrovnik

England – spilling warm beer over each other beside some stairs in Croydon

England win

Result

8-8 after extra time.

It’s going into penalties…

*deep breath*

Goulash Disko

Goulash Disko Festival returns to Vis island this September

Amongst the many music festivals and events held in Croatia every summer, here’s one that’s rather unique! Goulash Disko, taking place on the island of Vis (12th – 16th September 2018), is the first crowd-funded music festival – 100% independent and sponsor free!

Goulash Disko

Held in the beautiful little town of Komiza on the amazing island of Vis (one of our favourites – and that of almost everyone else that’s been there!), the five day festival in fact also includes an opening concert on day zero, and and extra Day+1 to help extend the party. There will also be before and after parties held in Split and Zagreb, so if you want to experience a island festival and combine it with the delights of these two cities, this is just the thing.

About Goulash Disko

As mentioned, Goulash Disko is an entirely crowd-funded music festival. They aimed to raise €25,000, with all money going towards attracting a stellar line up and building the best possible infrastructure. And as of 30th April, they are fully funded (and then some) – congrats to them!

The festival knows no limits and loves to explore new sounds and genres rooted in the Global Underground. Expect world infused and eclectic music styles! There will also be performers and workshops of different kinds – non-music related – that will spice up the whole program of the festival.

Iva and Yves are the duo behind Goulash Disko. Having started the night 7 years ago when they lived in Dublin, they settled in Croatia and came up with the idea of organising the first ever crowd funded music festival in the world. The rest, as they say, is history! (And what an excellent choice of location for such a festival!)

Since then, the community has grown even more. There are regular Goulash Disko events that take place in Croatia and Slovenia, and you may even have come across happenings in Berlin, London, Paris or Vienna. Hundreds of artists are now part of the movement.

Goulash Disko Line Up

Among the first names that have been added to the bill are Channel One (UK), of the world’s greatest and best known dub reggae sound systems, run by legendary selector Mikey Dread, and featuring MC Ras Kayleb. Those in London will surely know them – they’re one of the main sound systems at the Notting Hill Carnival each year.

Guts (France) is one of the main producers on the French hip hop scene. His set will be eclectic, dynamic and highly danceable.

Mop Mop Trio ft. Anthony Joseph (UK/Italy) are one of the most interesting percussion based acts in the current world-jazz scene. Mop Mop will perform as a trio, and will team up with Trinidadian poet Anthony Joseph, who conjures up echoes of Gil Scott Heron and Isaac Hayes.

Cigarra (Brazil) is a DJ, producer and label manager of Tropical Twista Records. She grew up in the dense underground scene of São Paulo, and participated in the effervescence of its parties and festivals as well as in the original formation of the renowned Voodoohop.

Habibi Funk (Germany) is a label dedicated to reissuing stereotype-busting sounds from the Arab world; label owner and DJ Jannis Stürtz comes to Goulash with his crate full of records.

Other names on the bill include Kognitif (France), Bwoy De Bhajan (Denmark), Mr Raoul K (Ivory Coast), The Freeborn Brothers (Poland), Barrio Lindo (Argentina), Martha Van Straaten (Germany), Thomas Von Party (Canada), Dreems (Australia), Ko Shin Moon (France) and Jhon Montoya (Colombia), with more artists also being announced soon.

As you can see from the list above, Goulash Disko is truly a world music event!

The island of Vis

Those of you who’ve been to Vis know how wonderful this island truly is! With a fascinating history (the island was closed to foreign visitors until 1989), Vis is also the furtherest (large) island away from the Croatian mainland and has something of an untouched and very relaxed vibe.

Check out this stunning video to get an idea of the beauty of Komiza and Vis:

Getting to Goulash Disko

Split is the best airport to fly to – see our Getting to Split page for details of flights from the UK and Europe. From there, there are daily ferries and catamarans to Vis Town – see more on our Getting to Vis page. From Vis Town, there are buses across to Komiza.

Love Stories Museum in Dubrovnik

Love Stories Museum in Dubrovnik – the world’s first museum dedicated to love and romance

The wonderful city of Dubrovnik received a brand new museum earlier this month, and it’s the first museum in the world dedicated to the charming subjects of love and romance – the Love Stories Museum.

Love Stories Museum in Dubrovnik

Romance and Love in the Love Stories Museum

The Love Stories Museum collects and displays unique personal love stories and items of great sentimental value from around the world. You’ll see items such as a coffee mug from Sweden that got together an American woman and a man from France, and experience stories such as the emotional tale of a couple going through a divorce that decided to give their marriage one last try.

And you, the visitor, can also help expand the collection! You can donate your own personal love story which could end up part of the global love stories collection.

Love Stories Museum in Dubrovnik

The Love Stories Museum also focuses on local historical and mythical love stories from old Dubrovnik, so there’s a chance to learn more about the city in this respect. And there’s also a display dedicated to romantic plots from films and TV programmes that have been filmed in Dubrovnik in recent times – well known shows and cinematic features such as Game of Thrones, Robin Hood and Star Wars. The Museum also features a music section, introducing visitors to the people that have inspired some of the greatest love songs of all time.

Leave your mark on the Love Wall!

Once you’ve rejoiced in all the romantic stories the museum has to offer, leave your mark on the Love Wall. Sign it, doodle a picture or pin a couple selfie to it – it’s up to you to help create ‘the most romantic wall in the world’!

Interview with Soundwave Festival founder, Noah Ball

Interview with Soundwave Festival co-founder, Noah Ball

One of the top events on the Croatian festival scene this year (and all preceding years!) is the excellent Soundwave Festival. Although the event will be celebrating its 10th birthday this year, sadly 2018 will also see the very last Soundwave Festival take place. But don’t be too sad – instead, snap up some tickets and join the party to say farewell to Soundwave!

Concluding what has been an epic odyssey on its tenth birthday – making it one of the longest running festivals in Croatia – the sublime Soundwave has very much always taken its own adventurous path, staying true to its original roots built across a beautifully diverse music spectrum whilst weaving a mesmeric holiday and festival into a glorious weekend. The last Soundwave is an opportunity to return to the idyllic Dalmatian coastline one more time and savour some of the world’s finest live artists and DJs from across broken beat, reggae, afro, acid jazz, hip-hop, soul, funk, drum and bass and much more.

Here we have an interview with Soundwave Festival co-founder, Noah Ball, to discuss the reason behind calling time on Soundwave, what drew them to start a festival in Croatia in the first place, and what they’ve experienced in those ten years in Croatia.

Interview with Soundwave Festival founder, Noah Ball
Soundwave Festival co-founder, Noah Ball

Interview with Soundwave Festival co-founder, Noah Ball

1. We’re so sad to hear next year will be the last ever Soundwave! What was behind the decision for calling time on the festival?

It is sad isn’t it! We’ve had the most amazing ten years out in Croatia and it’s been a dream come true to see Soundwave grow, exceeding all expectations in the process. I think anyone who has ever attended the festival, ourselves included, look back on it with very fond memories and this is the main reason that we’ve decided to make the tenth event the final one.

There is always a temptation to keep pushing these things once you have built them up over such a long period of time and invested too much into them. We imagine it’s like a child you who have bought up and invested huge amounts of love, time and money into – once they reach a certain age and are ready to leave home, you don’t want to see them go!

But Soundwave has been so special, so it would be criminal of us to squeeze everything out of it and be left with something only half as special as it once was. Instead, we feel it’s time to say farewell and keep those amazingly fond memories., and to finish on what is going to be an amazing high.

2. Can you share any highlights (we’re sure there will be many!) that will be taking place at Soundwave in 2018?

We won’t be doing anything too different for the final Soundwave as we’ve had a winning formula since day one – lovely people, lovely music and a lovely location – we’ll have this in abundance again this year.

One thing that will be very special, is seeing both the original Soundwaver’s (the ones who were there 10 years ago who have many more responsibilities these days!) come back and join the new wave of soul music lovers. We’ve always had a fairly diverse age group, but this year it’s going to be the broadest, which in our opinion makes for a pretty special event!

As always, we’ll have those idyllic boat parties and the hedonistic late night after parties at Barbarella’s which are always stand out moments, and having recently finished booking in the full line up, we anticipate a few performances being big highlights – especially from Loyle Carner, Submotion, Riot Jazz, Jordan Rakei, Calibre, Scruff, Marky… the list goes on!

3. The boat parties! What stories can you tell us from the boat parties?

Over the years we’ve had some incredible DJs play on the boats including Mr. Scruff, Channel One Sound System, Bonobo & Craig Charles, but occasionally we also manage to cram on bands such as Riot Jazz and Quantic and his Combo Barbaro. These ones were pretty special as you can imagine! The boat parties are an essential part of any visit and really help form a big part of the festival’s experience.

4. What are the differences between the festival site today in Tisno, and the site (in Petrcane) where Soundwave was first held?

Both are magnificent locations. Petrcane was a beautiful place, but The Garden is perfectly suited for Soundwave. It’s located far away enough from residential areas that we don’t have to worry about sound limitations (something that we experience at Petrance) and is bigger than Petrcane, so we can get more people on site, plus there are nice places to eat, drink and stay in.

Beach at Soundwave Festival
The gorgeous beach at Soundwave

The Garden boasts a beach unlike Petrcane, which has become a key area of the festival and is where most people like to relax during the mornings and early afternoons before they reach party mode. It’s pretty idyllic and the water is crystal clear and a perfect remedy for those sore heads.

We’ve had great times at both venues, but it’s right that we enjoy the final ever Soundwave at our home of recent years, The Garden in Tisno.

5. What drew you to head to Croatia to start running a festival?

I was asked by the owner of The Garden (who was leasing the site at in Petrcane at the time) if I would like to put something on there which was more of a mellow vibe than the other festivals happening at the site. Both myself and Rob Waller (Soundcrash) were regularly booking soul, hip hop and jazz artists such as of Bonobo, Cinematic Orchestra, Mr Scruff and more for our respective parties in the UK, so we got our heads together and came up with Soundwave. We haven’t looked back since the first event, and it has run all the way through to the 10th anniversary this summer.

6. How does running a festival in Croatia today (in 2018) compare to when you started out?

Things are more organised – back in the day we’d be driving up and down Croatia picking up artists from various airports miles away from each other! There’s obviously a lot more competition and choice – there are lots of festivals here now through the summer.

We have got a lot more of experience now which helps in the general running of Soundwave, every year things get easier. And it is still exciting when you put the line up together and see it build up over the year, especially as this is the last one! Croatia is a beautiful place and attracts great music minded people, it is hard to imagine this being anywhere else.

7. How does it compare running three different festivals in the country, in two quite different locations (The Garden Tisno, and Fort Punta Christo near Pula)?

It’s interesting as Tisno is a much smaller place than Pula and the size of the festivals reflect this. Soundwave is 2,500 people vs. Outlook and Dimensions which are 15,000 & 10,000 respectively.

It’s nice to experience both – Outlook and Dimensions are bigger productions so you see huge international acts play to huge audiences which is always spectacular. Soundwave is special in different ways as you get to see amazing artists and bands play in a beautifully intimate setting to a couple of thousand people, so they are very different experiences.

If you’re heading to the wondrous Love International this summer (27th June – 4th July), here’s the festival update that you’ve been waiting for – details of the Love International boat parties!

20 boat parties have been revealed, with a number of new crews joining the festival for the very first time along with many experienced hosts returning. These boat parties will be setting sail on the sparkling Adriatic Sea afternoon, evening and night, aboard the legendary sea dogs Argonaughty and The Martina.

Argonaughty made its debut voyage way back in Petrcane at The Garden Festival so it’s no surprise that boat parties – a few hours on the warm sea with lovely people and great music – are a key element of many a Croatian festival, and definitely so for Love International.

Hosted by club nights, labels and collectives who are friends of the festival, the boat parties feature everything from deep disco, soulful excursions and crate-dug gems, through to sublime house and techno and plenty of absolute classic hands-in-the-air tracks. Every voyage promises an abundance of fun where pretty much anything goes – both under the sun and the stars.

Tickets for the boat parties have gone on sail this morning (Thursday 29th March) at 9am, so now’s your chance to snap them up. Quick! Tickets can be purchased at loveinternationalfestival.com.

Latest Love International Line up Reveal

Perhaps most exciting of all is the news of the debut of some incredible DJ sets. First up, Four Tet is quite simply one of the world’s finest electronic musicians, spanning pure formed dance music to the scintillating eclectic strands which surround it. Likewise, fellow aural experimentalist Floating Points also transcends genre, weaving through jazz, classical, soul and broken-beat influences into house and techno, a cerebral sound scientist who enervates, educates and entertains in equal measure. Hunee, one of 2017’s most in-demand DJs, segues through delectable disco and soulful to jackin’ house excursions, infused with fizzing energy and the mark of crate-digging endeavour. And Bicep know a bit about crate-digging, too; the mercurial duo are widely regarded as two of the finest DJs and producers of the electronic era.

But there’s plenty more exciting line up news besides! Love International regular Midland lights up the festival each and every time he appears. Three of the finest exponents of house and disco, Gerd Janson, Young Marco and Horse Meat Disco will be in Tisno this summer, with each really epitomising the sunshine energy of the festival. Life and Death founder and Love International debutant DJ Tennis is next, the Italian icon working with Tale of Us and Mind Against and he is an esteemed label A+R, producer and DJ. Then Palms Trax makes a very welcome return after last summer’s scintillating boat party, the Berlin-based artist a regular at Panorama Bar, Concrete and De School. And fellow Berliner Call Super is another outstanding young DJ and producer, linking together cultured house and techno.

Crazy P Soundsystem are perennial fixtures at the festival and bring a lovely touch of gravitas and warmth; occasional regulars Paranoid London check in with a DJ set; and revered Dutch selector Job Jobse played Trouw’s last ever set, a huge honour bestowed on the feel-good young spinner bringing hands-in-the-air energy to the Adriatic. Two inspired duos also touch down – disco deviants Rub and Tug weave across Italo to acid via post-funk rarities, and Electric Chair’s The Unabombers, much-loved and long-seasoned Tisno heads, return to Love International.

The festival’s co-founder, Tom Paine, explains:

“We are feeling really happy with the lineup for 2018 which features many brilliant debuts and some very welcome friends and family returning. Our third year is going to be very special indeed for everyone and we can’t wait for the summer!”

The latest wave of artists further illuminates the festival’s broad musical scope and takes in an even wider range of sounds and styles, from sunshine reggae and seductive soul to rare funk, cosmic disco and all-out 4/4. This includes everyone from the genre-skipping Artwork to San Fran disco artisans Honey Soundsystem, from electronica’s creative force Moscoman to esteemed Italo exponent Intergalactic Gary, from Space Dimension Controller’s vast musical tastes to the Secretsundaze’s crew and their acclaimed house and techno-inspired events, and from Moxie’s eclectic vision on NTS, Marvin and Guy’s genre-defying 70s and 80s party sets and the truly unique Rebolledo.

Further highlights include techno-rock hybrid Zombies in Miami, the legendary founder of the hugely influential Robert Johnson club, Ata, and intoxicating boogie, pop, house and disco from Francis Inferno Orchestra. Berlin’s Wilde Renate resident Paramida has shaken up the city with her DJ sets and revered label, Love on The Rocks, whilst there’s a very welcome return from Tisno perennials, PBR Streetgang, having just release their debut album, and genre-bending Rinse FM star Josey Rebelle brings house, techno, boogie and much more. Then Heidi Lawden’s Magic Roundabout radio show reflects her taste-making and genre-skipping delight, Panorama Bar’s resident Roi Perez also weaves across many styles, Metro Area’s deep disco king Darshan Jesrani returns to Croatia and Ray Mang performs a rare set away from his always estimable studio work.
