Visiting Croatia in September

Who would have thought it? We’re over halfway through August, which means we are most definitely hurtling towards the end of summer. (Although, personally, I definitely think summer runs until the seasons change in September. But then, I like to be an optimist about the weather.)

Some of you who are perhaps yet to take your summer hols, or are looking for a late summer trip to ease yourself back into autumn ways, may be thinking of visiting Croatia in September. You may be pleased to learn that September is considered the best month to visit amongst those in the know – the weather is still good (yes, you will – most probably – still be able to swim in the sea!), the high season crowds will have departed for home by the end of August, but everything – tourist-related – is still very much open.

Visiting Croatia in September

The island of Vis

However, you probably have a whole list of questions – what’s there to do? Where shall we go? We’re here to help you with these questions and more if you’re considering visiting Croatia in September!

The weather in Croatia in September

First things first. This is something we always get asked – is the weather in Croatia still good in September? Yes, very much so. It may come as no surprise really – as a Mediterranean country, the summer weather continues long into September. The last few years have seen very hot summers in Croatia, and this glorious weather definitely hung around in the ninth month of the year. (In fact, even into early October too!) This year there’s also been a rather hot summer in Croatia with temperatures in so many places reaching the very high 30s celsius. In fact, during July, temperatures for practically the entire country were classified as being “very warm” or “extremely warm” (poor Vis was the only place in Croatia to simply be “warm”), whilst most of the country was considered to be either “dry” or “very dry”.

All in all, we expect the weather in Croatia to be great this September! The Croatian Meteorological Society has plenty of forecasts in English – at the moment, they obviously don’t show much data for September, but take a look at their seven-day forecasts a little closer to the time.

The sea off the coast of Croatia – having had all summer to warm up – will be great, temperature-wise, in September. Yesterday, for example, temperatures reached around 23/24C for many places, with the sea a few degrees colder in the north of the coast.

Disclaimer: Yes, of course, the weather everywhere is starting to turn a little crazy. So don’t hold it against us if conditions in Croatia inexplicably turn winter-y during September. That’s definitely not supposed to happen. And it’s very, very unlikely to happen. But if anything insanely crazy, weather-wise, happens…don’t blame us!

What’s on in Croatia in September?

Croatia has established itself as something of a prime festival destination in the last few years, with more and more dance festivals being added all the time to each year’s calendar. September is when the festival season winds down, but there’s still a couple of events taking place, both in Istria. The brand-new-for-2013 Unknown is being held in Rovinj from 10th to 14th September, with names like Jessie Ware, The Horrors, Jamie xx and SBTRKT all on the bill. Now in its second year, the electro festival Dimensions will be on in Pula from 5th to 9th September, making use of Fort Punto Christo that’s close to the town. (Dimensions is the “little sister” of Croatia festival favourite Outlook, which is on itself in Pula from 29th August to 2nd September.)

For the less dance music type events, there’s the Split Film Festival on from the 14th to the 21st September. The historical festival Gioistra – now in its seventh year – will be held in Porec from 13th to 15th September, with assorted costumes, revelry, sports, street entertainers and products on sale, all re-enacting 18th century times. The second Korkrya Baroque Festival is an international music festival on the island of Korcula, being held from 7th to 13th September. Zagreb hosts both the general entertainment festival RujanFest (literally, ‘SeptemberFest’) from the 13th to the 22nd September, as well as the 46th edition of the International Puppet Theatre Festival (9th to 14th September).

For those more keen on sports events, Croatia will host the Davis Cup tie against Great Britain in Umag (which means clay!) on the weekend of 13th to 15th September. And yes, Wimbledon champ Andy Murray is expected to play. Tickets can be bought on the ticket portal Eventim.hr.

Be sure to pop into the tourist office of wherever you are to ask for events taking place locally!

Where should I go in Croatia in September?

As we’ve covered so far, the weather will be great in September, so it’s hard not to pick a location on the coast. Dubrovnik should be as busy it always is, and there’s certainly a large number of cruise ships scheduled to dock during that month, bringing thousands of (day trip) passengers at a time. Split has had a great season so far, so it wouldn’t be any surprise to see this place as bustling as it has been. (Seeing as it’s Croatia’s second largest city, it is relatively lively all year round!) Some of the more popular islands, such as Brac and Hvar, and other popular locations on the coast (the Makarska Riviera) are still likely to receive a good number of visitors, even whilst the season starts to wind down.

If you’re after something a little quieter, perhaps consider the most outlying of all the larger Croatian islands – Vis. As a quieter and slightly mystical destination any time of year, we think this place would be divine in September. Other islands to check out include those in the Kvarner bay  such as Krk, Cres, Losinj or Rab, all of which are perhaps not as well known amongst non-Continental European visitors.

Istria is of course one of the most popular destinations in the whole of Croatia, with delights such as Porec, Rovinj and Pula all located here. The county has suffered a slight fall in visitor numbers this year, but will still see good numbers overall. If you’d like to visit, why not consider something like a foodie or activity-based holiday – two things the region does very well! Check out Istria Tourist Board’s guides to gastronomy and sport.

From a logistical point of view, almost all flights from the UK to Croatia still operate in September – and well into October too. The one exception to this is Ryanair’s flights from London Stansted to Rijeka Airport stopping at the end of August. See our Flights to Croatia page for details of all routes to Croatia from the UK.

Do note that in almost all cases, ferry schedules will still be running to summer timetables until the end of September. Certainly, almost all of Jadrolinija‘s local routes remain the same until the end of September, as does their twice-a-week coastal route that runs Rijeka – Split – Stari Grad (Hvar) – Korcula – Mljet – Dubrovnik and vice versa. The exception lies with some of their international sailings (to Italy) that reduce in frequency in September, and again further in October. Venezia Lines‘ sailings between Istria and Venice will only operate from Porec and Rovinj during September.

Or check out Adriagate – they offer last minute discounts on accommodation for destinations all over Croatia!

All in all, if you’re visiting Croatia next month, we hope you enjoy your stay! Why not drop us a line on email, Twitter or Facebook to let us know how it went – we’d love to hear from you!

Taking place in the party-central location that is Zrce Beach on the island of Pag from 17th to 21st August 2025, the festival has added a whole heap of international names have been added to the bill. They include Andrea Oliva, Joseph Capriati b2b Seth Troxler, Chris Liebing, Josh Baker and many, many others. Read on to find out more about the Sonus Festival line-up!

2025 Sonus Festival Line-Up - Zrce Beach, island of Pag, 17-21 August 2025

The 12th Edition of Sonus Festival

That’s right – 2025 will see the 12th edition of Sonus take place. This year will prove even more magical than ever as the festival will see an amazing three-way partnership between veteran, industry-leading event producers Time Warp, Balkans electronic music tastemakers We Love Sound, and Insomniac (best known for its iconic EDC events).

Newly announced to proceedings is London’s Enzo Siragusa headlining an exclusive FUSE stage partnership. Enzo’s tastemaking label and party brand has very much set the tech house agenda for the last decade-plus and takes in elements of dub, minimal and garage to light up dance floors worldwide. Further stage partners include Basel’s nightlife and cultural hub Nordstern, plus the return of cult party crew Space Miami, and the raw underground of LA’s Factory 93, each adding their own brand of magic to the proceedings.

And what about those new names on the bill? There will be tech house titan Andrea Oliva, CLR founder Chris Liebing, and a special b2b set between Metamorfosi label head and Italian innovator Joseph Capriati and Detroit maverick Seth Troxler. Fresh and heavyweight house will come from Josh Baker, heady cosmic tech from Sweely, and lofty selections from Serbia’s Tijana T. All shades of techno come from the likes of Klangkuenstler, Lilly Palmer and UNCAGED’s Marco Faraone, with the younger Berlin generation represented in DJ Gigola and Elli Acula, whilst Moritz Hofbauer (live), Julian Wassermann (live) and Deniz Bul perform as part of a FCKNG SERIOUS showcase alongside labelhead Boris Brejcha.

Sonus will once again take place in the famous Zrce Beach clubs of Aquarius, Papaya, Kalypso, and Noa Beach Club – and the Noa Beach Stage will be brand new for this year, allowing revellers to swim and dance in the water all week long for the first time.

The legendary boat parties will of course return, as will eminent afterparties and pop-up events. And if that’s not enough for you, there will be plenty more on your doorstep – for the nearby town of Novalja offers a heady mix of adventure travel and cuisine. There will be water sports, kayaking, rock climbing, quad bike hire, bungee jumping, wind and kite surfing, and more – all just 10 minutes from the festival.

Importantly, Sonus Croatia will stay true to its original founding principles which means that the music comes first from meticulously crafted production to the sound systems – it is these values that have cemented the festival as a European and global standout for over a decade.

2025 sees the return of the lauded boat parties, alongside the eminent afterparties and pop-up events. The beachfront venues for this unreal escape are Aquarius, Papaya, Kalypso, and Noa Beach Club – the Noa Beach Stage is all new for this year and allows people to swim and dance in the water all week long for the first time. Sonus 2024 reveals more headliners, back-to-back sets and stage breakdowns

The 11th edition of Sonus Festival (18th – 22nd August 2024, Zrce Beach, island of Pag) has just this week revealed a whole heap of exciting news for this year’s event – including more headliners, details of back-to-back sets and stage breakdowns. And single-day tickets have also just been released – so if you can’t make the full five days of the festival, you can still have a slice of epic Sonus fun.

Sonus Festival 2024

One of the first festivals to arrive in the region, Sonus is known for putting the music first whether it’s at one of the best open-air clubs in Europe, at Sonus’ boat parties or at its afterparties. And that’s not all the festival is about, as there’s so much more for you to enjoy; from kayaking to rock climbing and quad bike adventures or bungee jumping, wind and kite surfing, or downtime with some wellness and relaxation. Novalja, on the doorstep of Zrce Beach, also provides a cultural fix with its history, architecture and wonderful cuisine options.

Head down to Sonus Festival this summer for all this and more, set on a gorgeous beach with stunning scenery and the twinkling Adriatic Sea as a backdrop.

More headliners and back-to-back sets for Sonus 2024

So, who’s been added to the headliners? Paradise founder and global house tastemaker Jamie Jones, as well as long-time techno pioneer, Berghain mainstay and Figure label head Len Faki. The fearless, London-based HE.SHE.THEY. resident SYREETA – known for her adventurous, multi-genre selections – will also be on the bill, as will endlessly innovative tech house producer and electrifying DJ Wade.

If that’s not enough, special, three-hour back-to-back sets are also now part of this year’s Sonus. These back-to-backs allow artists to sonically meander in unison; Jamie Jones will pair off with the Metamorfosi founder Joseph Capriati for what will be a deep dive into the freshest house and techno, while Loco Dice B2B Seth Troxler will see the two titans serve up their thrilling, party-starting sounds, weighty grooves and colourful curveballs.

These names have been added to what is already a truly spectacular line-up – see www.sonus-festival.com for the full list. Do also head on over to Sonus’ Instagram page to see the full day-by-day schedule.

Mystic Mountain Festival

Learn more about the magical Mystic Mountain Festival in June

These days, Croatia is home to a huge number of music festivals, with something for all music tastes and desires – EDM, hip hop, house, rock and much, much more. But we’ve just come to learn about the intriguing Mystic Mountain Festival (19th – 25th June 2023…yes, taking place over the summer solstice) that offers something a little different – something a little extra – than all the rest, and it’s something you’ll want to know about too!

Mystic Mountain Festival

About the Mystic Mountain Festival

Would you believe it, a festival located very close to the Plitvice Lakes National Park? That’s the Mystic Mountain Festival! Actually situated in Rudopolje in Lika-Senj county, the festival site is only about a 10-minute drive to that famous National Park in this beautiful part of Croatia as well as being an hour away from the coast. Mystic Mountain is also incredibly close to one of Europe’s longest ziplines, the Zipline Pazi Medo (which translates to Beware of the Bear Zipline!).

Mystic Mountain is also something unlike just a regular music festival. Intended to be more than just a place for partying, Mystic Mountain is something between a nature retreat and a music festival, with a deeper sense of purpose.

Mystic Mountain Festival

With 700 attendees, the festival offers a cosy and intimate vibe with the idea that everyone gets to know everyone else during the week-long event – the duration of which is rare for a small festival. You’ll be amongst people with similar interests, who are explorers and adventurers, curious about finding out more about being and life.

Your days will be filled with music, transformative workshops, seminars, lectures and professionally guided hiking tours – ALL of which are included in the price of the festival ticket. Good food and drinks will also be on offer.

But this festival also balances its music with the sounds of nature and silence. That means that music starts on the main dance floor each day at 11am, but will be turned off at midnight Monday to Thursday and at 5am-6am on Friday and Saturday night. So a true balance of four silent nights and two full party nights.

Mystic Mountain will be a week-long celebration of life!

Mystic Mountain Line-Up

A mix of electronic journeys around the world, shamanic downtempo, oriental house, tribal techno, afro house, psy trance, Balkan beats and more will fill the festival site.

Acts so far announced include Blue Forest Live, Pepi Jogarde, Stevo, Juha, Zmayo, Cosmic Ocean, Riodario, Zho, Sretni Edi and more. See the festival’s Line-Up page for more info and to hear previews of these acts.

Accommodation at Mystic Mountain

The festival ticket includes space in the on-site camp. The camp offers drinking water, showers and toilets.

Alternatively (at an additional cost) you can arrange indoor accommodation at any private accommodation facility in the area (you may find our Accommodation in the Plitvice Lakes page helpful), or at the Big Bear Resort that is 3km from the festival site. The Big Bear Resort offers luxury four-star mobile homes for groups.

Sonus Festival 2025 announces the first acts appearing next year

Exciting news! Sonus Festival 2025 has just today announced the first set of acts that will be appearing at next year’s event (Zrce Beach, island of Pag, 17th – 21st August) – and the names on the bill are just as spectacular as ever! And if this line-up reveal has whet your appetite for summer festival fun, you’ll be over the moon to hear that tickets go on sale tomorrow, Wednesday 4th December at 6pm CET.

Even more thrillingly, the 2025 Sonus Festival will take the event to new heights thanks to a partnership with the world’s leading live events experience creator, Insomniac. Together with the mix of legends, top tastemakers and new stars on the line-up – as well as the beautiful setting of top party destination Zrce Beach – Sonus Festival 2025 will surely be the best event yet.

Sonus Festival 2025

About Sonus Festival 2025

Would you believe that Sonus will already be in its 12th year in 2025? The festival will be brought to you by heavyweight event producers Time Warp, who have no less than thirty years of experience in genre-defining programming and We Love Sound, who stand as the foremost electronic music tastemakers in the Balkans with 20 years behind their belts. Add in to the mix experience creators Insomniac – known for their EDC events and production of some of the best festivals in the world, using state-of-the-art lighting, pyrotechnics and sound design, large-scale art installations, theatrical performers and next-generation special effects – and…phew…we’ve got quite some event on our hands.

The festival’s mantra of “in music and nature we trust” is apparent with the stunning venues that are the open-air clubs in beautiful Novalja. These venues offer gorgeous views – with beautiful sunrises and sunsets – plus the opportunity for revellers to party on the sand, in the sea or under the stars. The main clubs of Aquarius, Papaya, and Kalypso will return as venues, whilst Noa Beach Club (previously just a sunrise afterparty venue) will also be an integral part of the programme in 2025. Brand new for next year will be the Noa Beach Stage; this will be Sonus’s first stage environment on the sand! Here you will be able to swim and dance in the water all week long.

Boat parties will of course return for 2025 (how could they not?!) – previous years have seen the likes of Archie Hamilton, Ellen Allien, Enzo Siragusa, Clara Cuvé, Paula Temple, and countless more all lay down varied and vital sets. Pop-up parties will also return, as will afterparties – one of the core elements of Sonus’s identity.

And if all of that doesn’t fill up your festival timetable, there’s plenty of fun and adventure to be had in the local area. From water sports to kayaking, rock climbing to quad biking, plus bungee jumping, wind and kite surfing – all just 10 minutes from the festival!

Sonus is produced BY ravers FOR ravers. Combining a curated soundtrack with top-tier production, blending together adventure, travel and culture, it’s no surprise that Sonus draws a like-minded, warm and welcoming crowd from all over the world.

So who’s actually on the bill?

Well, appearing at Sonus Festival 2025 will be Drumcode boss Adam Beyer, Berghain paragon Ben Klock, German duo FJAAK, Italian titan Joseph Capriati, the melodic sounds of ARTBAT and Deborah De Luca, and the hard-edged grooves of Spain’s Indira Paganotto.
