News is in from this year’s Dimensions Festival (29th August – 2nd September 2018) – a full run down of all the stage sets and takeovers has been revealed.

The day to day breakdowns for the ten stages have now been revealed – with takeovers from Hessle Audio, Zeezout, Resident Advisor, Stamp The Wax, Make Me, Electrix, Exit Records, JAW Family and more. Hosting acts include Underground Resistance, Peggy Gou, Nina Kraviz, Bonobo (All Night Long), Hunee, Jon Hopkins, Ben UFO, Saoirse, Maurice Fulton, Helena Hauff, DJ Stingray plus over 100 more acts.

About Dimensions

With no less than ten (ten!) stages at the Festival, Dimensions has fully confirmed its places as one of the most forward thinking electronic parties, bringing together the underground’s most dynamic, thoughtful and innovative artists.

Taking place over five days, the seventh Dimensions Festival will once more return to its idyllic abandoned fortress spot outside Istria’s main town Pula. All the old favourite Festival areas return, from the iconic Moat area through to the sun-kissed Beach stage. Attendees can discover fresh new breakout acts, or revisit classic talents that have laid the foundations.

As well at the main festival, Dimensions will also see a fantastic opening concert on the evening of Wednesday 29th August with Kraftwerk, Nils Frahm and Moodymann all performing.

The soundtrack to the final evening comes courtesy of Bonobo, playing all-night-long from soul and jazz, disco, house, electronica and beyond – in a way only he can.

The Garden Stage

The leafy GARDEN STAGE is another world within the festival. Lush green surroundings host an impactful set of names; starting with a journey through house, jazz and feel-good vibes galore straight from the Motor City, enter the Mahogani music godfather, Moodymann and vibe purveyors Amp Fiddlerand Marcellus Pittman. Closing out on a high, embark on a final genre defying journey Sunday with the Hessle Audio power crew – Ploy, Pearson Sound, JLIN, Pangaea and the mighty, Ben UFO.

Stables

In the heart of the Dimensions Fortress, the vast STABLES boast another anticipated set of names, venturing through left-field rarities and body-moving beats with Dark Entries’ Josh Cheon, electronic explorations from Alessandra Adriana and more oddball grooves from Jon K, Heinrich Dressel & Teslasonic and Pierre. Stamp the Wax and DJ Directory venture from the ballroom bringing afro-beats, and sunshine sounds with Sean OD, Born Cheating, STW head honcho Aaron L and emerging talent,Will Lister. Embark on a journey through sonic explorations and darker persuasions start to finish from directory members Kiara Scuro, Batu, Skee Mask and Lee Gamble. Then soothe your soul with Music is my Sanctuary hosting Chicago hip-hop icon, Open Mike Eagle, Stones Throw founder, Peanut Butter Wolf and Milo, not forgetting bound-breaking crew Darker Than Wax.

Ballroom

The intimate 100 capacity BALLROOM is a firm favourite, giving way to hedonistic house, and far-flung oddities. This year, Stamp the Wax take the reins on Thursday and Sunday presenting the Dimensions DJ Directory – a motley crew of underrated and breakthrough selectors from across the Globe including the likes of Heels & Souls, Harri Pepper, Molinaro, Aaron L and Sam Hall. Friday’s flavour is hot house heat from RuDan, Ste Roberts, ASOK and more, while Saturday shines a light on Croatia’s emerging scene and it’s key players.

Arija & Courtyard

Offering local artists an international platform, ARIJA hosts both Croatian selectors with a full day takeover alongside discerning DJ’s and underground talent. Another spot for aficionados to find something new,Saoirse, Lady Blacktronica, San Soda and Sheridan are just a few names hitting the much loved COURTYARD this year, with respected party purveyors Journey Of Sound, Make Me and Love Muscle on takeover duties.

Subdub

MUNGO’S COURTYARD has been part of Dimensions since day one, the heart and soul of the festival with a system to reflect that. Dimensions mainstay and Deep Medi boss Mala heads up the Thursday bill, following DJ Lag, The Bug and Simon Scott (Muslimgauze Set). Friday is an exploration through bass with live sets from Bluetrain and Upwellings, plus a dub special from man of the hour, Skee Mask. An annual highlight, Saturday’s Exit Records takeover hosts DnB’s finest, with imprint founder dBridge as well as Steve Spacek, Skeptical and Fixate aboard. High-energy old skool sounds marry deep, off-kilter dub and bass with a vintage special from Dispatch x 1985 with Alix Perez, Ant TC1, Kid Drama, Amoss plusSP:MC & Fokus and more on board.

Beach

The spot to catch sets in the most idyllic of settings whilst relaxing on the Croatian shores, Dimensions’ BEACH STAGE sees acts wander through funk, world, soul, disco and more, with unmissable live shows. Thursday’s all about chilled beach vibes with Alfa Mist, Ariwo and the festival’s very own Dimension’s Soundsystem. Repping London’s free-form and jazz scene it’s Total Refreshment Centre and Ezra Collective, plus Sons of Kemet. Don’t miss Children of Zeus, Darkhouse Family and Palms Trax on Saturday, while the Sunday promises feel good vibes from Eglo Records familia with Fatima and Alexander Nut. Hunee soundtracks the final Adriatic sunset, the ideal end to Dimensions 2018.

Goulash Disko

Goulash Disko Festival returns to Vis island this September

Amongst the many music festivals and events held in Croatia every summer, here’s one that’s rather unique! Goulash Disko, taking place on the island of Vis (12th – 16th September 2018), is the first crowd-funded music festival – 100% independent and sponsor free!

Goulash Disko

Held in the beautiful little town of Komiza on the amazing island of Vis (one of our favourites – and that of almost everyone else that’s been there!), the five day festival in fact also includes an opening concert on day zero, and and extra Day+1 to help extend the party. There will also be before and after parties held in Split and Zagreb, so if you want to experience a island festival and combine it with the delights of these two cities, this is just the thing.

About Goulash Disko

As mentioned, Goulash Disko is an entirely crowd-funded music festival. They aimed to raise €25,000, with all money going towards attracting a stellar line up and building the best possible infrastructure. And as of 30th April, they are fully funded (and then some) – congrats to them!

The festival knows no limits and loves to explore new sounds and genres rooted in the Global Underground. Expect world infused and eclectic music styles! There will also be performers and workshops of different kinds – non-music related – that will spice up the whole program of the festival.

Iva and Yves are the duo behind Goulash Disko. Having started the night 7 years ago when they lived in Dublin, they settled in Croatia and came up with the idea of organising the first ever crowd funded music festival in the world. The rest, as they say, is history! (And what an excellent choice of location for such a festival!)

Since then, the community has grown even more. There are regular Goulash Disko events that take place in Croatia and Slovenia, and you may even have come across happenings in Berlin, London, Paris or Vienna. Hundreds of artists are now part of the movement.

Goulash Disko Line Up

Among the first names that have been added to the bill are Channel One (UK), of the world’s greatest and best known dub reggae sound systems, run by legendary selector Mikey Dread, and featuring MC Ras Kayleb. Those in London will surely know them – they’re one of the main sound systems at the Notting Hill Carnival each year.

Guts (France) is one of the main producers on the French hip hop scene. His set will be eclectic, dynamic and highly danceable.

Mop Mop Trio ft. Anthony Joseph (UK/Italy) are one of the most interesting percussion based acts in the current world-jazz scene. Mop Mop will perform as a trio, and will team up with Trinidadian poet Anthony Joseph, who conjures up echoes of Gil Scott Heron and Isaac Hayes.

Cigarra (Brazil) is a DJ, producer and label manager of Tropical Twista Records. She grew up in the dense underground scene of São Paulo, and participated in the effervescence of its parties and festivals as well as in the original formation of the renowned Voodoohop.

Habibi Funk (Germany) is a label dedicated to reissuing stereotype-busting sounds from the Arab world; label owner and DJ Jannis Stürtz comes to Goulash with his crate full of records.

Other names on the bill include Kognitif (France), Bwoy De Bhajan (Denmark), Mr Raoul K (Ivory Coast), The Freeborn Brothers (Poland), Barrio Lindo (Argentina), Martha Van Straaten (Germany), Thomas Von Party (Canada), Dreems (Australia), Ko Shin Moon (France) and Jhon Montoya (Colombia), with more artists also being announced soon.

As you can see from the list above, Goulash Disko is truly a world music event!

The island of Vis

Those of you who’ve been to Vis know how wonderful this island truly is! With a fascinating history (the island was closed to foreign visitors until 1989), Vis is also the furtherest (large) island away from the Croatian mainland and has something of an untouched and very relaxed vibe.

Check out this stunning video to get an idea of the beauty of Komiza and Vis:

Getting to Goulash Disko

Split is the best airport to fly to – see our Getting to Split page for details of flights from the UK and Europe. From there, there are daily ferries and catamarans to Vis Town – see more on our Getting to Vis page. From Vis Town, there are buses across to Komiza.

A temporary campsite will be set up for Goulash Disko attendees, open from 11th to 18th September. Situated on a protected piece of land and shaded by palm trees, the campsite will be accessible by both cars and camper vans. In order to cover costs, use of the campsite costs 200 Kunas for the 7 days. (An additional €15 is payable to Komiza Town for parking if you have your own car or camper van.)

Interview with Soundwave Festival founder, Noah Ball

Interview with Soundwave Festival co-founder, Noah Ball

One of the top events on the Croatian festival scene this year (and all preceding years!) is the excellent Soundwave Festival. Although the event will be celebrating its 10th birthday this year, sadly 2018 will also see the very last Soundwave Festival take place. But don’t be too sad – instead, snap up some tickets and join the party to say farewell to Soundwave!

Concluding what has been an epic odyssey on its tenth birthday – making it one of the longest running festivals in Croatia – the sublime Soundwave has very much always taken its own adventurous path, staying true to its original roots built across a beautifully diverse music spectrum whilst weaving a mesmeric holiday and festival into a glorious weekend. The last Soundwave is an opportunity to return to the idyllic Dalmatian coastline one more time and savour some of the world’s finest live artists and DJs from across broken beat, reggae, afro, acid jazz, hip-hop, soul, funk, drum and bass and much more.

Here we have an interview with Soundwave Festival co-founder, Noah Ball, to discuss the reason behind calling time on Soundwave, what drew them to start a festival in Croatia in the first place, and what they’ve experienced in those ten years in Croatia.

Interview with Soundwave Festival founder, Noah Ball

Soundwave Festival co-founder, Noah Ball

Interview with Soundwave Festival co-founder, Noah Ball

1. We’re so sad to hear next year will be the last ever Soundwave! What was behind the decision for calling time on the festival?

It is sad isn’t it! We’ve had the most amazing ten years out in Croatia and it’s been a dream come true to see Soundwave grow, exceeding all expectations in the process. I think anyone who has ever attended the festival, ourselves included, look back on it with very fond memories and this is the main reason that we’ve decided to make the tenth event the final one.

There is always a temptation to keep pushing these things once you have built them up over such a long period of time and invested too much into them. We imagine it’s like a child you who have bought up and invested huge amounts of love, time and money into – once they reach a certain age and are ready to leave home, you don’t want to see them go!

But Soundwave has been so special, so it would be criminal of us to squeeze everything out of it and be left with something only half as special as it once was. Instead, we feel it’s time to say farewell and keep those amazingly fond memories., and to finish on what is going to be an amazing high.

2. Can you share any highlights (we’re sure there will be many!) that will be taking place at Soundwave in 2018?

We won’t be doing anything too different for the final Soundwave as we’ve had a winning formula since day one – lovely people, lovely music and a lovely location – we’ll have this in abundance again this year.

One thing that will be very special, is seeing both the original Soundwaver’s (the ones who were there 10 years ago who have many more responsibilities these days!) come back and join the new wave of soul music lovers. We’ve always had a fairly diverse age group, but this year it’s going to be the broadest, which in our opinion makes for a pretty special event!

As always, we’ll have those idyllic boat parties and the hedonistic late night after parties at Barbarella’s which are always stand out moments, and having recently finished booking in the full line up, we anticipate a few performances being big highlights – especially from Loyle Carner, Submotion, Riot Jazz, Jordan Rakei, Calibre, Scruff, Marky… the list goes on!

3. The boat parties! What stories can you tell us from the boat parties?

Over the years we’ve had some incredible DJs play on the boats including Mr. Scruff, Channel One Sound System, Bonobo & Craig Charles, but occasionally we also manage to cram on bands such as Riot Jazz and Quantic and his Combo Barbaro. These ones were pretty special as you can imagine! The boat parties are an essential part of any visit and really help form a big part of the festival’s experience.

Soundwave Festival - Boat Parties

4. What are the differences between the festival site today in Tisno, and the site (in Petrcane) where Soundwave was first held?

Both are magnificent locations. Petrcane was a beautiful place, but The Garden is perfectly suited for Soundwave. It’s located far away enough from residential areas that we don’t have to worry about sound limitations (something that we experience at Petrance) and is bigger than Petrcane, so we can get more people on site, plus there are nice places to eat, drink and stay in.

Beach at Soundwave Festival

The gorgeous beach at Soundwave

The Garden boasts a beach unlike Petrcane, which has become a key area of the festival and is where most people like to relax during the mornings and early afternoons before they reach party mode. It’s pretty idyllic and the water is crystal clear and a perfect remedy for those sore heads.

We’ve had great times at both venues, but it’s right that we enjoy the final ever Soundwave at our home of recent years, The Garden in Tisno.

5. What drew you to head to Croatia to start running a festival?

I was asked by the owner of The Garden (who was leasing the site at in Petrcane at the time) if I would like to put something on there which was more of a mellow vibe than the other festivals happening at the site. Both myself and Rob Waller (Soundcrash) were regularly booking soul, hip hop and jazz artists such as of Bonobo, Cinematic Orchestra, Mr Scruff and more for our respective parties in the UK, so we got our heads together and came up with Soundwave. We haven’t looked back since the first event, and it has run all the way through to the 10th anniversary this summer.

6. How does running a festival in Croatia today (in 2018) compare to when you started out?

Things are more organised – back in the day we’d be driving up and down Croatia picking up artists from various airports miles away from each other! There’s obviously a lot more competition and choice – there are lots of festivals here now through the summer.

We have got a lot more of experience now which helps in the general running of Soundwave, every year things get easier. And it is still exciting when you put the line up together and see it build up over the year, especially as this is the last one! Croatia is a beautiful place and attracts great music minded people, it is hard to imagine this being anywhere else.

Soundwave Festival

7. How does it compare running three different festivals in the country, in two quite different locations (The Garden Tisno, and Fort Punta Christo near Pula)?

It’s interesting as Tisno is a much smaller place than Pula and the size of the festivals reflect this. Soundwave is 2,500 people vs. Outlook and Dimensions which are 15,000 & 10,000 respectively.

It’s nice to experience both – Outlook and Dimensions are bigger productions so you see huge international acts play to huge audiences which is always spectacular. Soundwave is special in different ways as you get to see amazing artists and bands play in a beautifully intimate setting to a couple of thousand people, so they are very different experiences.

Tickets for Soundwave Festival

Tickets cost £129 for 5 days (club and boat parties are extra) and can be purchased at www.soundwavecroatia.com.

Details of 2018 Love International Boat Parties revealed

If you’re heading to the wondrous Love International this summer (27th June – 4th July), here’s the festival update that you’ve been waiting for – details of the Love International boat parties!

Love International Boat Parties

20 boat parties have been revealed, with a number of new crews joining the festival for the very first time along with many experienced hosts returning. These boat parties will be setting sail on the sparkling Adriatic Sea afternoon, evening and night, aboard the legendary sea dogs Argonaughty and The Martina.

Argonaughty made its debut voyage way back in Petrcane at The Garden Festival so it’s no surprise that boat parties – a few hours on the warm sea with lovely people and great music – are a key element of many a Croatian festival, and definitely so for Love International.

Love International Boat Parties

Hosted by club nights, labels and collectives who are friends of the festival, the boat parties feature everything from deep disco, soulful excursions and crate-dug gems, through to sublime house and techno and plenty of absolute classic hands-in-the-air tracks. Every voyage promises an abundance of fun where pretty much anything goes – both under the sun and the stars.

Tickets for the boat parties have gone on sail this morning (Thursday 29th March) at 9am, so now’s your chance to snap them up. Quick! Tickets can be purchased at loveinternationalfestival.com.

There has been a lot of support for us and this decision, and it sounds like a lot of the old heads will be coming out to join us in saying farewell to the festival in fine style. We are working hard to make it the best Soundwave ever – celebration of the last 9 years brought together for the final tenth show. It’s going to be really special as we all say goodbye.”

Latest Love International Line up Reveal

Perhaps most exciting of all is the news of the debut of some incredible DJ sets. First up, Four Tet is quite simply one of the world’s finest electronic musicians, spanning pure formed dance music to the scintillating eclectic strands which surround it. Likewise, fellow aural experimentalist Floating Points also transcends genre, weaving through jazz, classical, soul and broken-beat influences into house and techno, a cerebral sound scientist who enervates, educates and entertains in equal measure. Hunee, one of 2017’s most in-demand DJs, segues through delectable disco and soulful to jackin’ house excursions, infused with fizzing energy and the mark of crate-digging endeavour. And Bicep know a bit about crate-digging, too; the mercurial duo are widely regarded as two of the finest DJs and producers of the electronic era.

But there’s plenty more exciting line up news besides! Love International regular Midland lights up the festival each and every time he appears. Three of the finest exponents of house and disco, Gerd Janson, Young Marco and Horse Meat Disco will be in Tisno this summer, with each really epitomising the sunshine energy of the festival. Life and Death founder and Love International debutant DJ Tennis is next, the Italian icon working with Tale of Us and Mind Against and he is an esteemed label A+R, producer and DJ. Then Palms Trax makes a very welcome return after last summer’s scintillating boat party, the Berlin-based artist a regular at Panorama Bar, Concrete and De School. And fellow Berliner Call Super is another outstanding young DJ and producer, linking together cultured house and techno.

Crazy P Soundsystem are perennial fixtures at the festival and bring a lovely touch of gravitas and warmth; occasional regulars Paranoid London check in with a DJ set; and revered Dutch selector Job Jobse played Trouw’s last ever set, a huge honour bestowed on the feel-good young spinner bringing hands-in-the-air energy to the Adriatic. Two inspired duos also touch down – disco deviants Rub and Tug weave across Italo to acid via post-funk rarities, and Electric Chair’s The Unabombers, much-loved and long-seasoned Tisno heads, return to Love International.

The festival’s co-founder, Tom Paine, explains:

“We are feeling really happy with the lineup for 2018 which features many brilliant debuts and some very welcome friends and family returning. Our third year is going to be very special indeed for everyone and we can’t wait for the summer!”

The latest wave of artists further illuminates the festival’s broad musical scope and takes in an even wider range of sounds and styles, from sunshine reggae and seductive soul to rare funk, cosmic disco and all-out 4/4. This includes everyone from the genre-skipping Artwork to San Fran disco artisans Honey Soundsystem, from electronica’s creative force Moscoman to esteemed Italo exponent Intergalactic Gary, from Space Dimension Controller’s vast musical tastes to the Secretsundaze’s crew and their acclaimed house and techno-inspired events, and from Moxie’s eclectic vision on NTS, Marvin and Guy’s genre-defying 70s and 80s party sets and the truly unique Rebolledo.

Berlin’s Wilde Renate resident Paramida has shaken up the city with her DJ sets and revered label, Love on The Rocks, whilst there’s a very welcome return from Tisno perennials, PBR Streetgang, having just release their debut album, and genre-bending Rinse FM star Josey Rebelle brings house, techno, boogie and much more. Then Heidi Lawden’s Magic Roundabout radio show reflects her taste-making and genre-skipping delight, Panorama Bar’s resident Roi Perez also weaves across many styles, Metro Area’s deep disco king Darshan Jesrani returns to Croatia and Ray Mang performs a rare set away from his always estimable studio work.

In only two years, Love International has built up a strong following of fans who travel from around the world to attend. That’s no doubt in part of the festival’s concept of a holiday and a festival blended together so seamlessly. It’s truly no wonder that the festival has become so popular so quickly.

Love International 2018 Line-Up Details

The first wave of acts appearing in 2018 has already been announced. The Love International team have revealed an inspired selection who are all are the fore of their respective fields, from headline names through to the next wave of genuinely exciting DJs and producers.

First up is Roman Flugel, who weaves across many styles from ambient, house, techno, electro and leftfield, whilst the sublime crate digger Move D continues to explore and challenge the boundaries of electronic music. And speaking of genre-skipping talent, Joy Orbison‘s bouncing garage-house has been celebrated for blending elements of house, two-step, jungle, techno and dubstep has kept him right at the fore of club culture.

Further debuts include Avalon Emerson’s techno and house filtered through the futurism of Detroit techno; and fellow female icon Octo Octa’s melody and vocal-inspired house music, woven with 90s nostalgia and Balearic joy, brings her to the region for the first time. The Idjut Boys have plenty of their own too, with 20 years of throwing parties and DJing around the world between them, and two further acclaimed names also feature; Jane Fitz’s enduring dedication to her craft has seen her wide-ranging sets become the stuff of legend, and newcomer Powder’s music is a blend of rich melodies and dance floor delight.

Love International also features some friends returning, for some now an annual pilgrimage to the coast; Hessle Audio’s Ben UFO is pretty much first on the list, as is Fabric’s iconic Craig Richards – the pair are now further revered for their all night back-to-back sets at Barbararella’s. Glaswegian duo Optimo fuse techno, electro, rock and leftfield, whilst Prosumer is a Tisno face and regular, a disco ambassador of immense stature. Felix Dickinson has been an instrumental part of the UK’s underground dance scene for the last 3 decades whose relevance continues to evolve, and Daniele Baldelli offers a different pace with his chuggy cosmic disco sets. Shanti Celeste has released on Future Times, Idle Hands and Secretsundaze, acclaimed vinyl archivist and musical curator Gideön has many years of experience to offer Love International, whilst whilst Saoirse’s continued rise to prominence stems from her tireless work ethic both in clubs and behind the scenes. Finally, Futureboogie’s Christophe and Dave Harvey – also one of Love International’s co-founders – complete the first wave of names.

The festival’s co-founder, Tom Paine, explains:

“We believe we are attracting like-minded people to the festival – that’s the essence of what we want to create here. It’s developing a sense of community which everyone brings with them, and that feeling really comes through during the entire week.  We are again working with DJs and live performers who understand this too; many of them stay for as long as they can before and after they play. We are very proud to be bringing in some debut names to Tisno, as well as our old friends returning, and the first wave of names we feel is a great marker for how the complete billing will be looking early next year. At Love International we are honing our philosophy even further – it’s not always about the biggest DJs and artists, for us it’s about having the best, whether right at the top of their game or part of the next taste-making generation. We can’t wait to have them over in Tisno do to their thing!”

Saying Goodbye to Soundwave

Noah Ball, one of Soundwave’s founders, explains:

“It’s not been an easy decision to bring Soundwave to a close in 2018, but for us it also feels like the right one to make, too. We’ve had an amazing run in Croatia, from the first years in Petrcane and now in Tisno, and we all look back with great pride and affection for what we have achieved in the last 9 years here in this wonderful country.

Finishing on our tenth year will bring everything together into one last adventure and we intend to make it a fitting climax for the festival and everyone who has ever been a part of it, from the music lovers around the world who come each year, the artists who are like our friends and all of the crew involved.

It’s going to be a very special few days next summer as we say goodbye to Soundwave, and we are putting together a line-up representative of the festival’s unique sound. It’s certainly going to be emotional – we hope to see lots of old faces and new joining us for this final edition!”
