The 12th edition of the Makarska Jazz Festival takes place this month in the charming central Dalmatian town, from 28th to 31st August 2025. The festival line-up includes performances from highly regarded Croatian and international jazz musicians, as well as music workshops and morning concerts featuring young performers.

The Festival takes place at a number of prominent locations around Makarska, with evening concerts held at the open-air stage by the Monument to the Revolution. Morning concerts and workshops are free, whilst evening concerts are ticketed. Tickets can be purchased ahead of time on www.eventim.hr or at Eventim sales points, or at the entrance on the day of the concerts.

Croatian pianist Goran Filipec will be performing a repertoire from Liszt at London’s Bechstein Hall on Thursday 27th February 2025. He will in fact be performing two concerts on that day, at 6.30pm and 8pm.

Filipec has been described as a pianist of “technical brilliance which allows him to express himself in an electrifying manner, demonstrating an imaginative exuberance, sensibility and luminosity which we are not used to hearing at the present time” (Ritmo).

A musician who always captures the hearts of international audiences and critics, he is renowned for his exceptional interpretations of the works of Franz Liszt and his classical and romantic repertoire of high virtuosity. In addition, Filipec defends creativity and subjectivity in performance observing it as a co-creation of the musical work, which he often blends with his own arrangements and adaptations.

London’s newest cultural centre, Bechstein Hall on Wigmore Street in Marylebone, will be hosting a concert by Croatian Pianist Martina Filjak alongside Moldovian Violinist Alexandra Connunova on 25th January 2025. They will be performing timeless classics from Clara Schumann, Brahms and Robert Schumann.

Martina Filjak is one of the most exciting artists to emerge in recent years, garnering international praise for her poetic passion and technical mastery at the keyboard as well as for her charismatic personality and magnetic stage presence. She came to international attention by winning the Gold Medal, the 1st Prize and the Beethoven Prize at the Cleveland International Piano Competition in 2009. This brought her numerous engagements in the United States and internationally.

Prior to that, she won 1st Prize at the Maria Canals Piano Competition in Barcelona and the Viotti Piano Competitionin Vercelli, and was a laureate at the Busoni Piano Competition.

Film lovers in particular will be given a special treat with a film festival organised by the Summer Stage Tuškanac; a perfect complement to Pop Up Summer Garden.

The film program on Summer Stage Tuškanac, organised by the Centre for Culture and Film Augusta Cesarca, starts on Saturday, June 9th with a screening of the animated film “Isle of Dogs”. This particular production comes from the world animated Zagreb film festival, Animafest.

At the opening of Pop Up Summer Garden today, 7th June, guests can dance into the night to the sounds of the best soul / r’n’b / funk musicians of the Croatian band SoulShadows SoundSystem. Dance rhythms continue with DJ Fiddly Digits & Nobs performing as Filthy Dancing Live. Friday 8th June is reserved for the Croatian band Ljetno Kino and DJ Oberan.

A new festival for Croatia in 2017 – Beats, Beer and Boogaloo!

There’s a brand new festival in Croatia for 2017, and one with an exciting twist! The very intriguingly named Beats Beer and Boogaloo will take place at the epic Garden Tisno from Thursday 13th to Monday 17th July and just this week they have announced the first wave of artists that will be appearing at the event.

Craig Charles’ Funk and Soul Club and Nick and Charlotte Colgan from The Garden Festival and The Garden Brewery have teamed up to establish this unique festival on the Dalmatian coast. As well as live artists and DJs providing a funked-up soundtrack, a whole host of craft beers from around the world will be available to enjoy.

Headliners at Beats, Beer and Boogaloo include Hot 8 Brass Band, a New Orleans brass band that blend hip-hop, jazz and funk styles with traditional New Orleans sounds to an incredible crowd-rousing effect; and iconic American R&B singer Geno Washington And The Ram Jam Band who together released 5 albums in the 1960s.

Also on the bill is the Craig Charles Fantasy Funk Band (plus special guest) which was created when Craig asked his show’s listeners who would be in their favourite funk band; since 2007 the band’s various members have performed at festivals around the world. Detroit-based Amp Fiddler is a celebrated soul/funk musician who has shared stages and studios with everyone from Prince and George Clinton to Primal Scream and underground Detroit producer Moodyman. Craig Charles himself will be DJ-ing at the festival; one of the UK’s foremost funk and soul spinners, his encyclopaedic knowledge is at the fore each time he gets behind the decks. Guts (solo/MPC) is sublime hip-hop disciple of immense repute, whilst Kon is the last of an increasingly rare breed of dedicated crate diggers, bringing his deep knowledge of obscure goodies to clubs and festivals worldwide.

Other acts on the festival line-up include Smoove and Turrell, The Haggis Horns, The Reflex, The Allergies, Lack of Afro joins, Al Kent, Rayko, Pablo Contraband (Disco Deviant), Shaka Loves You, Eddie, Piller, Jackson Tyson Charles, Big Danny Kane, Dean Sunshine Smith, Madnice and Darryl Marsden (Ghetto Child).

A collective of Croatia’s leading DJs and crate diggers will also be appearing including The Funk Delegation Croatia, Bocca Sofistifunk, Borovich, Chill, D-Gree, Dr. Smedi Secer, Jopa, Pips, Slipmat, Soul Bader, Tomo Ricov, Umbo, Venom and Werft. Further Croatian support comes from Mate Kokic, Nick & Pepi, Nikola Smiljanic Trio and Rolin Humes.

But what about the beer side of things? The Garden Brewery will be showcasing their full range of products at Beats, Beer and Boogaloo. Rated as Croatia’s best new craft brewery in the country for 2016 by RateBeer.com, their presence is sure to delight many of festival’s crowd. Several other craft breweries have also been announced, each a pioneer from their respective nation offering their delicious beers to savour. From London there’s Gipsy Hill, Five Points, Four Pure and Magic Rock; Dogma from Serbia; Bevog from Austria; and three from Croatia: Nova Runda, LAB and Zmajska. Each brewery will bring two types of beer to feature on a long tap bar, and everyone will be able to sample more than 30 beers during the festival – more breweries will be announced soon from across Europe.

Whilst Beats, Bear and Boogaloo is keen to offer up something different for the Croatian festival scene, there will also be much that will feel familiar. Will new unique festival elements such as street food, tutored drinks tastings, and a carnival procession through the streets of Tisno, there’s also festival favourites such as boat parties and club nights at legendary Barbarella’s.

The Garden Festival – which finished on its 10th anniversary in 2015 – originally catalysed the whole festival scene in this part of Croatia, with visionary founders including Nick and Charlotte Colgan instigating what has become one of the world’s most talked about dance music destinations. Post Garden Festival, Nick and Charlotte then launched their most ambitious project to date – building from scratch The Garden Brewery in Zagreb, which has produced 17 different beers shipping to 25 EU countries. They have further plans for expansion in 2017 and beyond as well as a dynamic programme of music too.

With plenty of exciting news about the second edition of the festival already this year, details of the Love International boat parties have been announced! And better still, you don’t have long to wait to be able to buy tickets – they go on sale this Friday, 31st March!

Previous attendees of many festivals in Croatia know that the boat parties are a complete must when coming down to rave on the Croatian coast. This year, Love International will feature twenty sailings during the week-long run of the festival, culminating with the Secret Island Party on 5th July.

The Love International boat parties will run day and night, meaning you can party your heart out on the crystal-clear Adriatic waters in the glorious sun or under the twinkling stars. Sailing will be on the legendary old sea dogs The Argonaughty and Martina, both of which will dock near the festival’s small sandy bay.

Membrain Festival comes to Croatia’s coast this August

There’s another new name on the Croatian festival scene this summer – Membrain Festival (18th to 21st August 2016)! Taking place near Sibenik, Membrain is a festival of bass culture with some of the best-known names of the European Underground bass scene appearing on the bill. The festival’s rich line-up will also include educational lectures and workshops, a wonderful location making the most of the local environment, and catering consisting of the best local Dalmatian produce.

Membrain will be taking place in the bay of Minerska, which is around 10km from Sibenik. The festival site is an abandoned ex-military base surrounded by thick pine forest; next to the crystal clear waters of the Adriatic sea and a beautiful beach, there’s plenty to do all day long.

The artists on Membrain Festival’s line-up will all be performing for the very first time on Croatia soil, solidifying Membrain’s unique concept. The bill will see a very wide spectrum of bass music genres; on the festival’s three main stages and a solar stage there will be more than sixty European and regional artists. Drum and Bass, Liquid, Dubstep, Dub, Ragga, Jungle, Jump-up, Grime, Global and more will all entertain the bass addicted audience.

The best-known headliner is surely UK duo Hybrid Minds. Having gained considerable critical acclaim over the last few years, they’ve reached the top of the underground scene with their recognisable liquid dnb sound.

Sub Zero is the UKBass champion of the danceable Drum and Bass, known in wide circles of the scene around the world and performing regularly at festivals & clubs.

Levela is a Drum and Bass producer best known for his collaborations with some of the biggest names on the dubstep scene including Datsik. He’ll be at the Membrain Festival as part of his fully booked summer Sensory Tour.

Italian DJ/Producer/MC collective Numa Crew is the main representative of the Italian independent bass scene. They are known for their collaborations with artists such as Dub FX, General Levy, DJ Vadim, and many more.

Soundwave is held at The Garden Tisno – and anyone who’s been there before can attest that it’s one of the most idyllic places in the world for a festival! With beautifully clear waters, a private sandy beach and endless hours of sunshine by day and star-lit skies by night, nature really plays its part. And with the incredible water-side beach bar, stages built around their surroundings (including the Olive Grove stage, nestled under a canopy of trees) and the open-air night-club Barbarella’s, you’ll have an amazing time practically any time, day or night.

The headline act at this year’s Soundwave is Pharoahe Monch, formerly a member of New York City duo Organized Konfusion. Having developed a reputation as one of underground hip-hop’s preeminent lyricists, Pharoahe Monch is also an incisive political and social commentator, using hip-hop as a platform for political engagement. Calibre will also be headlining; with his distinctive sound that takes on elements of jazz, funk, dub and techno, Calibre is responsible for some of the most beautiful and sublime tracks in drum and bass.

But that’s just the start of things when it comes to the line-up! Digital Mystikz’s Mala will be returning, as will funk and soul DJ and one of 6 Music’s lead presenters, Craig Charles. Fatima & The Eglo Band will be performing live, and Gentleman’s Dub Club will also bring their energetic and exhilarating live show to Tisno. Channel One Sound System will also be at Soundwave – they’ve been regulars at the Notting Hill Carnival for over 30 years and are the UK’s most prominent and respected reggae crew; the Red Bull Culture Clash winners will bring their ground-shaking bass to the festival.

The Riot Jazz Brass Band will swoop in with their peace-lovin’ aggro jazz, hip-hop samples, funked-up favourites and re-interpreted dubstep too, dropping drum and bass and dancefloor bangers that always have everyone dancing. Romare blends Afrocentric beats and global inspirations, as encapsulated in his brilliant Projections album. The incredible voice of Harleighblu – one of the UK’s brightest new names – will enchant the Soundwave crowds. Italian producer C. Crisci’s Clap! Clap! project samples African tribes, bands and singers, creating tribal rhythms through drum machines and synths. And BAFTA and MOBO award winning artist Akala is a rapper with heart, soul and steel, a historian who brings a touch of lyrical grace and edge to Soundwave.

Those in London who are interested in enjoying a bit of rock – Croatian style – may be very pleased to hear that new young band Gruhak are to perform at the 100 Club on Oxford Street on 27th March 2013.

With elements of Led Zepplin, The Doors, Pink Floyd and The Who, Gruhak are the first Eastern European band that compose their own music and lyrics for English speaking audiences. Having previously achieved cult status on YouTube – they were voted as “The Best Ever Classic Rock Cover Band” in 2010 – they are now branching out with their own material, which will be featured at this promotional concert in London. Their album ‘Make A Stand’ has also been very well received in the UK music press, acquiring a number of top mark reviews.
