Statue of King Tomislav (Kralj Tomislav), the first King of Croatia. The statue stands opposite the train station.

Behind the statue lies a park and the Art Pavillion - shown here (unfortunately) with scaffolding!

Glavni Kolodvor, the main train station in Zagreb and your entry point if you arrive by train.

All attractions are...that way (street sign, opposite the Glavni Kolodvor)

The Hotel Esplanade, built in 1925 and one of Zagreb's most famous and luxury hotels.

The rooftop of Zagreb City Library.

Zagreb City Library

A tram whizzing past on Trg kralja Tomislava.

The Art Pavillion from the other side - again, with scaffolding.

As you walk up from the train station to the main square, there are three parks which are collectively known as Zrinjevac. They feature the busts of some famous Croats.

Tree-lined Boskoviceva ulica, with the Croatian Academy of Arts and Scienes just appearing on the right-hand side of the picture.

A beautiful and tranquil spot in bustling Zagreb.

Cafe society: cafes line the pedestrianised Bogoviceva ulica.

Preradovicev trg, also known as Cvjetni trg - cvjet meaning flower in Croatian, as the square is home to a flower market. Here you can see Orthodox Church in the background.

Preradovicev trg is so called because of a statue of the Croatian poet Petar Preradovic, who stands in the centre.

Approaching the main square in Zagreb - Trg bana Jelacica - from the direction of Ilica.

In the middle of the main square stands the famous statue of Ban Jelacic.

The bell towers of Zagreb Cathedral.

Zagreb Cathedral - officially The Cathedral of the Assumption of Virgin Mary and St Stephen.

In front of the cathedral stands a statue of the Virgin Mary, who is being protected by four gold angels

This fellow stands in a small square just above Dolac market. He is Petrica Kerempuh, a folk jester who appears in Croatian art and literature.

Tkalcicevia ulica, home to numerous cafes and bars and none as something of a lively nightspot in Zagreb.

A statue of St George, near Kamenita vrata.

The archway leading to the Kamenita vrata - Stone Gate. Above the archway the date 1760 is engraved; this is the year of the last reconstruction of the gate.

St Mark's Church in Markov trg (St Mark's Square); the roof tiles show the coat of arms of Zagreb (right) and the coat of arms of the Kingdom of Croatia, Dalmatia and Slavonia (left).

The Parliament of the Republic of Croatia.

St Mark's Church and the parliament together.

The tiles of St Mark's Church peek through whilst standing in Katerinin trg (Catherine's Square).

Views of the rooftops of Zagreb whilst standing next to the funicular railway.

The funicular railway, ready to make its journey up to Gornji Grad (Upper Town).

Lotrscak Tower, from where a cannon is fired each day at noon and has been for over 100 years.

Dolac market, the main market in Zagreb. The market consists of both the building you see here and an open-air market on its "roof".

Another view of Ban Jelacic.

Final view of the bustling main square in Zagreb, Trg bana Jelacica.
