As one of Croatia’s neighbouring countries, it’s relatively easy to travel from Hungary to Croatia, especially if you’re travelling to or from Budapest.
Travelling from Hungary to Croatia by Train
There are several direct trains per day from Budapest station to Zagreb, with the journey taking between 6 and 6 and a half hours. From Zagreb, you can then take a train or bus to your required destination in Croatia.
In the summer months – mid-June to the end of September – there is a direct train from Budapest (and other towns in Hungary) to Split that operates three times a week. The journey time from Budapest to Split is 15 hours, and the majority of the journey is at night, meaning you can take advantage of a sleeper bunk bed on this night train and wake up to a glorious view of the Croatian coastline.
You can find out more details about this on the MAV-START website. Do also see the Die Bahn website for the best information about train timetables.
Travelling from Hungary to Croatia by Bus
There are several daily buses from Budapest to Zagreb run by Flixbus. Journey time is around 4 and a half to 5 hours.
During summer, there are also direct bus services from Budapest to the Croatian coast, with most routes running once a week. The Adria Express goes to Rijeka, Opatija, Pula, Rovinj and Porec (in total, 11 hours to Porec).
The Dalmatian Express runs from Budapest to Split.
Finally, the Montenegro Express goes all the way from Budapest to Budva (catchy!), including a stop in Dubrovnik en route.
Again, details of these routes can be found on the Volanbusz website, or look up times and tickets on the Flixbus website.
