Introduction & History
Brac has a more evolving history than some of the other Adriatic islands, being under the control of the Romans, Croatia and Croatia-Hungary, Venice, Austria, France and Russia for differing periods of time.

About Brac
Brac is the largest island in Dalmatia at 150 square miles (394 square km) in size, the third largest in the Adriatic, and is one of the sunniest with 2,700 hours of sun annually. The island is known for its fishing, agricultural products and the locals produce good wine, olive oil, figs, nectarines and other fruits. But the main export is, and has been from ancient times, the famous Brac stone from which many buildings in the world have been built, including the White House in Washington D.C.

The main resorts are Supetar, Bol - with the most beautiful beach in the Adriatic, the Golden Horn (Zlatni Rat), Sutivan, Milna and Sumartin.

Getting to Brac
Due to its proximity to the mainland and Split in particular, Brac is one of the most accessible islands in the Croatian Adriatic - ferries run almost every hour from Split to Supetar (with bus connections on to other resorts). There are also daily catamaran services from Split to Bol, and a once-a-week catamaran service to Milna. Both of these catamaran services then travel on to the island of Hvar (to Jelsa on the Bol route, and Hvar Town on the Milna route), so you can also reach Brac from Hvar if you're travelling in the opposite direction. Finally, there is also a daily ferry from Makarska to Sumartin (on the east of the island). See the Jadrolinija website for timetable details.

There is also the rather small Brac Airport near the resort of Bol, which has a scheduled flight each Saturday during the summer months, run by Croatia Airlines.

Getting around on Brac
If you don't have your own hire car, bus is the best way of getting around the island. Buses run between all the major resorts and towns on the island - the best idea is to check at the bus station in the town you're staying in for up-to-date timetable information.

Top Sights on Brac
Zlatni Rat Beach ("Golden Horn") beach in Bol is one of Croatia's most famous sights, images of which are frequently used in advertising material! The shingle beach stretches out over 500m from the coastline and - uniquely - its shape changes over the months and seasons depending on winds and water current. The beach is very popular during the summer months, so be prepared for it to be busy if you visit!

Vidova Gora is Brac's highest peak (at 778 metres high) and indeed is actually the highest peak of any of the Croatian islands. It is close to Bol, from where you can hike or cycle up for the athletic, or take an organised excursion for the not-so athletic.

Milna has a wonderfully picturesque little harbour, and its calm waters - as the village is situated in a bay - mean its a popular port of call for sailing boats.

Accommodation
Hotels and private accommodation are plentiful in all the resorts on the island. See Accommodation on Brac.
