Train is a popular
mode of transport in Croatia, and there are several trains a day
between most of the major towns. In comparison with Western Europe, tickets
are inexpensive. An upgrade of the track between Zagreb and Split a few years ago,
to allow for new tilting trains, reduced the journey time from its
previously rather lengthy 9 hours to 5 and a 1/2 hours on some routes. Tracks on some other lines
are also being upgraded to reduce journey times.
Funnily enough, services on some routes have been
been reduced in frequency. For example, the Zagreb - Rijeka route,
previously one of the busiest, has suffered in popularity as the
recently new motorway has reduced bus journey times to only 2 and 1/2 hours
- the train takes 4 hours.
It must be said that the train network in Croatia
is not as extensive as the bus network.
If travelling along the coastline, bus would be a much better
choice - or, for a much more leisurely option, take a ferry!
To answer one of our more popular questions that we receive - there
are no train services to Dubrovnik! (The town does not have a
train station.)
