Property
in Opatija in the Mail on Sunday
The Mail on Sunday recently featured an article on purchasing
property in Opatija. Although very popular as a holiday destination
- the coastal town is a premier resort and was even a popular
place for holidaymakers during the Austro-Hungarian Empire - Opatija
is not often considered for real estate reasons.
The article states that Opatija is not immensely
popular with Brit buyers who prefer the regions around Split and
Dubrovnik in Dalmatia, and that it is much more popular with German
and Austrian purchasers.
Opatija is in a great location for transport and
infrastructure reasons, as Rijeka is only 40 minutes away by road.
Rijeka Airport (in fact on the nearby island of Krk) has international
flights once a week from Heathrow with Croatia
Airlines, and from Hanover and Colgone/Bonn with low-cost
German airline HLX (with connecting
flights to Newcastle, Manchester and Shannon available). There
are also international bus lines to Italy and Slovenia, and Zagreb
is only 3 and a half hours away by motorway. Moreover, it is still
within relatively easy reach of northwest Italy to which several
low cost airlines (most notably Ryanair)
fly to from the UK.
So what of the type of properties available? In
this more upmarket resort, amongst the most common type of properties
are charming and elegant villas; however, understandably, this
means that property in Opatija doesn't come cheap! Nevertheless,
prices are a fraction of those of comparable properties on French
and Italian rivieras. In all, Opatija can be considered to have
great investment potential.
