As we've explained on our Introduction to Getting to Croatia, some of you may consider travelling to Croatia indirectly to maximise your travel options. There are two ways of doing this: either travelling to an airport just outside Croatia (in Italy, Slovenia, Austria or Hungary); or flying via a stopover in another European country.
Here's our guide to help you make head or tail of where to fly to - or through - in order to reach your final destination in Croatia.
Okay, I'll fly to a place near Croatia. But how do I know what
city I need to fly in to? Good question! Ryanair fly to numerous towns
and cities along the eastern coast of Italy. Depending on where
you're headed, we wouldn't really recommend considering all of
them! For example, if your final destination is somewhere in Dalmatia,
it's not the best idea to fly to Venice; Ancona or Bari
are more suitable, as from either of these you can get ferries
across to various Dalmatian ports.
Overall, here's a brief guide (where
some destinations have multiple options, they are listed in order
of suitability - e.g. for Zagreb, it's best to fly to Ljubljana
but Graz is also suitable). We've really only included low-cost airlines in this table; there are, of course additional services via airlines such as British Airways and other national carriers.
Last updated 15th May 2012 (N.B. Some of these flights do not operate all year round - please check airline websites!)
PLEASE NOTE!!You shouldn't encounter any problems in
reaching Croatia in this way. However, careful travel planning
is a must: flight arrival times don't always correspond with times
for bus departures to Croatia; some ferry lines don't operate
daily, some only in high season...you get the picture.
*This sign means we have noted the best airport to fly via - it is possible, however, to travel via stopovers at other German airports as well. Please check the GermanWings website for full details!
**Travelling from a London airport with Easyjet is also available on this route. However, because there are already a considerable number of direct services from London to Zagreb, Split and Dubrovnik, we haven't included London in this column!
PLEASE NOTE!! We have listed all these routes purely on the basis that a stopover exists; flight connection times mean that a same-day stopover may not be possible. Please check airline websites carefully!
