In this section, we'll cover the various ways of getting to Croatia - you can do so by air, bus, train, car and ferry (at least, these are the most sensible ways of getting there!) and your mode of transport may well depend on your originating country.

Reaching Croatia directly:

By Bus

By Train

By Car

Reaching Croatia indirectly:
Many find that flying to Croatia can be quite expensive, and, coupled with limited availability during peak periods, making travel arrangements can be quite troublesome.

Currently, only a few low-cost airlines fly directly to Croatia from the UK (see our By Air section for more), so to maximise the possibilities for reaching the country, in some cases it is advisable to fly to nearby countries (namely, Italy, Austria and Slovenia) and then make your way over.

This is especially suitable when you're able to get excellent deals on flight tickets - for example, Ryanair often do one-way flights for only 1p!! (A tip: sign up to receive Ryanair's newsletter in order to be notified when they're running special flight deals.)

So, how do you utilise these low-cost flights in order to reach Croatia?
First, establish what city you need to fly into. Then read our special sections: Travelling from Italy to Croatia and Travelling from Austria to Croatia.

But how do I know what city I need to fly in to?
Good question! Ryanair fly to numerous towns and cities along the eastern coast of Italy. Depending on where you're headed, we wouldn't really recommend considering all of them! For example, if your final destination is somewhere in Dalmatia, it's not the best idea to fly to Venice; Ancona, Pescara or Bari are more suitable, as from any of these three you can get ferries across to various Dalmatian ports.

Overall, here's a brief guide (where some destinations have multiple options, they are listed in order of suitability - e.g. for Zagreb, it's best to fly to Ljubljana but Graz is also suitable):

My final destination is... Consider flying to... Airline... How do I reach Croatia from...?
Istria - Umag, Porec, Rovinj, Pula... Venice Marco Polo Easyjet

Venice

  Venice Treviso Ryanair Venice
  Trieste Ryanair Trieste
Kvarner Riviera - Rijeka, Opatija, Krk Island... Trieste Ryanair Trieste
Northern Dalmatia - Zadar... Ancona Ryanair Ancona
Mid-Dalmatia - Split, Makarska, Brac, Hvar, Korcula... Ancona Ryanair Ancona
  Pescara Ryanair Pescara
South Dalmatia - Dubrovnik, Cavtat... Bari Ryanair Bari
Zagreb Ljubljana Easyjet
  Graz Ryanair Graz
North and Eastern Croatia - Varazdin, Cakovec, Koprivnica... Balaton Ryanair
  Graz Ryanair Graz
  Budapest Easyjet
    SkyEurope
    Air Berlin

PLEASE NOTE!! You shouldn't encounter any problems in reaching Croatia in this way. However, careful travel planning is a must: flight arrival times don't always correspond with times for bus departures to Croatia; some ferry lines don't operate daily, some only in high season...you get the picture.

There are also some European low-cost airlines that fly into Croatia, although not (directly) from the UK, so you'll need to make a stopover:

Again, careful travel planning is a must - flight connection times don't always work out that well, meaning you might have to make a one-night stopover in some places.
